A man from Eltham has been convicted of killing his partner with a breeze block after pleading guilty to manslaughter by diminished responsibility.

Ricky Woodford, of Henwick Road in Eltham, south east London, appeared at the Old Bailey on Monday, 6 September , and was called a "coward" during an angry outburst by a man sitting in the public gallery.

He was charged with murdering Sarah Smith but pleaded guilty to her manslaughter, and has now been convicted of manslaughter by diminished responsibility following a report on his mental health.

The 42-year-old has now been pictured by Met Police, and has been remanded in custody for sentencing at the same court on 11th November 2021.

Ms Smith was found with fatal head injuries at the home she shared with the defendant in Eltham, south-east London, on October 30 last year.

Detective Inspector Karen Bangs said: "Our thoughts remain with Sarah's family, who continue to mourn her untimely loss and will do so for a very long time to come."

Police were called at 10:24hrs on Friday, 30 October 2020 to concerns for the welfare of the occupants at a residential address in Henwick Road, SE9.

Officers attended and found the body of Sarah Smith, who was aged 39 and from Greenwich.

Woodford was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder and taken into custody.

A post-mortem examination conducted at Greenwich Mortuary on Sunday, 1 November 2020 found the cause of death to have been head injuries.

At the hearing on Monday, Prosecutor Oliver Glasgow QC accepted Woodford's plea in light of a report on his mental health and following discussion with Ms Smith's family.
