August saw criminals jailed for an array of offences in south east London, ranging from sexual abuse to wounding with intent. 

A retired Northfleet vicar was jailed for over four years for sexually abusing two boys in the 1980s.

While a 20-year-old from Crystal Palace was put behind bars for his part in a fight after a rap gig which resulted in the death of a 21-year-old.

Gerard Keane

Gerard Keane, 61, sexually assaulted a "vulnerable" woman with learning difficulties in the showers of a public swimming pool.

He was convicted unanimously by a jury after less than an hour of deliberation on Thursday (April 12), having pleaded not guilty to a charge of causing or inciting a person with a mental disorder impeding choice to engage in sexual activity.

Keane initially approached the victim, whose disabilities affect her ability to communicate, in a steam room in Tonbridge on May 1, 2018, before following her into a shower area, where he carried out the assault.

Another visitor to the pool witnessed the offences and a support worker who had accompanied the victim was notified.

The court found that Keane had groomed his victim through social media prior to the incident.

Jacek Gralak

Jacek Gralak, 25, was jailed for eight-and-a-half years after breaking into multiple properties armed with a knife on Christmas Eve.

He was eventually subdued by officers who tasered him as he chased a terrified woman around her Gravesend home.

While at hospital, he attempted to urinate against a wall but was stopped from doing so by a police constable, who Gralak elbowed.

He admitted assaulting the emergency services worker, in addition to the other counts.

David Beater

David Beater, 80, a retired Northfleet vicar, was jailed for over four years for sexually abusing two boys in the 1980s.

He was allowed to work in churches for 25 years despite an earlier conviction.

He was sentenced at Maidstone Crown Court on Monday, August 23, after pleading guilty to offences against two boys, aged eight and 13, between 1982 and 1985.

Beater, the vicar at St Botolphs and St Marks Church in Northfleet, was previously convicted in 1985 for abusing a 14-year-old boy in Kent, but despite this was able to work in churches until 2010.

Kayode Badejo

Kayode Badejo, 20, was involved in a knife fight after a rap gig which resulted in the death of a 21-year-old.

Andre Bent was fatally stabbed amid violent scenes outside The Gallery Nightclub in Maidstone on August 25, 2019, after a performance by MoStack, a grime artist.

The fight involved several people who were seen on CCTV punching, kicking and hitting eachother, wielding weapons. 

Kayode Badejo, 20, formerly of Hancock Road, stabbed an associate of Vasilios Ofogeli, who was found guilty of Andre’s murder, in the back.

Badejo was sentenced on Tuesday 24 August 2021, to 11 years’ imprisonment, having pleaded guilty to wounding with intent.

Lucas Bugeja Price

Lucas Bugeja Price, 20, of Pasley Close, SE17, stabbed a man twice in the leg before stealing his designer jacket.

He was jailed for four-and-a-half years on August 4 after the victim’s blood was found on his trousers.  

The 19-year-old was with his friend on the Southbank at around 1am on Sunday, April 25, when they were approached by a group of men.

One of the group demanded the victim handed over his designer jacket.

At the same time another member of the group stabbed him twice in the leg.

Police were called and the victim was rushed to hospital by the ambulance, where he underwent surgery before being discharged.
