Around 150 climate activists have set up camp on Blackheath for two weeks, as they join Extinction Rebellion protests in central London.

XR began its fortnight of ‘Impossible Rebellion’ protests on Monday, when demonstrators blocked roads in central London, including around Trafalgar Square.

Activists, largely from the south west of England, have pitched tents outside All Saints church with the council’s permission, using the camp as a base.

A spokesperson for Extinction Rebellion said: “The camp is a place for us to stay while protesting in central London.

“The public reception has been lovely so far - we’ve been really grateful.

“People are welcome to come and talk to us at any time.

“The Heath is a nice place to be and has an interesting historic link to Wat Tyler and previous rebellions.”

Wat Tyler was a leader of the 1381 Peasants' Revolt, which began on Blackheath.

While the camp is primarily a sleeping place, tomorrow children are invited to participate in block printing a face painting.  

“The message of the entire rebellion is that we need to stop seeking out fossil fuels,” the spokesperson added.

XR is demanding the Government immediately end investment in fossil fuels that are driving climate change.

Police have already arrested around 200 protesters this week, as the environmental group targeted central London, including Oxford Circus on Wednesday, bringing traffic to a standstill.

Scotland Yard said a “significant” operation would be in place for the climate protests over the bank holiday weekend but also acknowledged the activists’ “important cause”.
