Crews with London Fire Brigade (LFB) battled a fire that broke out at a block of flats in Catford this evening (Monday, August 2).

Around 60 firefighters and eight fire engines were called to the scene on Bromley Road in Catford around 5.11pm on Monday.

LFB said that part of a bin room on the lower ground floor of the eight-storey block was damaged in the blaze.

Meanwhile, six adults and a child were led to safety by firefighters and then assessed at the scene by London Ambulance Service crews.

50 other people left the building before the the fire crews arrived, LFB said.

The blaze prompted a heavy emergency services presence in the area into Monday night as first responders continued to work at the scene, with the fire was brought under control by 6.22pm.

Station Commander Shaun Coltress, who was at the scene, said: "The fire started in a bin room on the lower ground floor and produced a significant amount of smoke.

"There were some local road closures so we advised motorists to avoid the area where possible."

Fire crews from Beckenham, Lewisham, Bromley, Forest Hill and surrounding fire stations were at the scene.

The cause of the fire is now under investigation.

The Metropolitan Police were contacted for comment.
