SCHOOL children have been doing their bit to help brighten up their community by planting flowers.

The wildflower seed bombs, made by children at Ongar Primary School, have been scattered in a section of community meadow at Cripsey Brook, Ongar.

School children and Shelley residents came together to sow the 150 seed bombs, which will flower and provide food for many insects over the summer months.

The school children will also learn about the importance of biodiversity in their community.

Members of Epping Forest District council’s community, culture and wellbeing team helped in the making and sowing of the flowers, along with members of the housing and grounds maintenance team who prepared the overgrown site.

The seed bombs were created by using a mixture of water, soil and seeds squeezed together to make a ball. These were dried out over a week at the school until they went rock hard.

Councillors and school representatives say this meadow is a community space to be enjoyed by everyone. Over the coming months they will see the wonderful colourful mixture of blooms and the wildlife attracted to them by their pollen and nectar.

A sitting and picnicking space is being created around two trees in the meadow, for the enjoyment of local people.
