The owner of a Balham pet shop has thanked the community for its ‘amazing’ support during the pandemic.

Celene Ward, who runs The Dog House near Tooting Common, spoke to natural pet food retailer, Earth Animal, about how her independent business had been affected in the last 18 months.

Celene opened her canine lifestyle and pet emporium in 2018 after working at the store part-time, alongside her marketing job.

“When the opportunity came to run the shop, I took the plunge and had a complete career change. I love my job and working there so thought, ‘Why not?’” she said.

Celene completely refurbished the shop and turned it into a boutique-style pet store. She considered all the things she would like for her own dog, including healthy food and treats.

The past 18 months have been challenging for small businesses, but Celene said: “I love that more people are supporting independent retailers. I’ve particularly noticed this more during the pandemic.

“Business is really good right now, and we’ve been able to create a lovely place for people to work, but also drop in for a chat and a catch-up. Despite being in London, we have such a village community feel.”

She thanked regulars and a local dog group at Tooting Common which have allowed the store to “mould to a niche” in the local community.

Celene added: “This was especially true during lockdown, as people had more time to research products and how they are made.”
