Major plans to transform Catford’s town centre which could see the South Circular re-routed have been approved by the mayor and cabinet.

The Catford town centre framework, a long-term vision which has been shaped more than 3000 comments during a public consultation, includes plans to build nearly 1,000 new social homes and make the area largely car free.

Six individual projects have now been revealed, which are due to be completed by the end of 2022.

Mayor of Lewisham, Damien Egan said: “This is a really important moment for Catford.

This Is Local London: "I’m excited that we can now focus on translating our vision into positive change for the local community as we work to make Catford the greenest town centre in London.

“Several exciting projects are already underway and there’s more to come over the next 12 months.

“These projects will deliver new social homes, bring hundreds of jobs into the town centre and help improve Catford’s cultural offer ahead of our year as Borough of Culture in 2022.”

The Old Town Hall is set to become a public services hub, with Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust and SLAM among the first to take up workspace this summer.

Public space improvements are scheduled for Holbeach Road, with new planting planned and additional support for Catford Mews, the independent cinema, with its plans for a new music venue.

A £7m refurbishment of Catford’s Broadway Theatre will be complete next year, helping the Grade II Listed building to play a major role in the Council’s plans for Borough of Culture 2022.

Construction is set to start on the restoration of the former Catford Constitutional Club which will see the building reopened as a pub, thanks to Good Growth Funding from the Mayor of London.

A planning application will also be submitted later this summer for improvements to the area around Catford and Catford Bridge stations, which could see works start next year.

Walking and cycling routes with a double-width pavement are aplanned along a stretch of Catford Road, along with a wider underpass under the South Circular Road and two river decks across the River Ravensbourne.

A new pedestrianised approach to Catford Bridge Station could also be in place by December 2022.

Thomas Lane Yard is also set to be redeveloped, providing space for businesses and 100 new affordable homes, including 40 social homes.
