We have received various notices that Epping Forest District Council is proposing to re-develop three sites for residential purposes comprising some 270 dwellings, and two car parks in Bakers/Cottis Lanes for commercial and other purposes.

The brownfield site in St Johns Road would seem suitable for housing/flats compatible with the adjoining development. The loss of the sports centre, which is quite sufficient for Epping, is regrettable. Similarly the loss of car parking at the council offices and the proposed three-storey development which will adversely affect adjoining properties is, again, ill advised.

The need for a swimming pool, cinema, a large sports centre and multi-storey car park would seem inappropriate in a relatively small historic market town and will result in a large mass of building dominating this part of our town and, again, adjoining properties. There will inevitably be an increase in pedestrians and traffic resulting from these proposals adding to an already, at times, congested highway.

There are already empty shops and a number of charity outlets in the High Street, an indication of the changing market conditions and reduced demand for retail premises.

Surely the council exists to represent local opinion and before considering the details of these proposals, it would seem appropriate to determine whether or not the residents of Epping are in favour of these proposals which will change irretrievably the appearance and character of our town. Let the people vote and decide.
