Police have shared a renewed appeal for information and video footage following the fatal stabbing of a 15-year-old boy in Woolwich on Monday.

Met Police said footage of the tragic incident, clips of which have been shared on social media, could be vital evidence in their investigation, and asked people to consider the boy's family when making video public.

Officers were called to Woolwich New Road at 5:23pm on July 5 to reports of a stabbing and found a 15-year-old boy suffering from a single stab wound.

Despite the combined efforts of emergency services, he was sadly pronounced dead at the scene at 18:08hrs.

The victim has since been named locally as Tamim Ian.

His next of kin have been made aware while police await formal identification.

Officers at the scene then searched the surrounding area, including a supermarket, for the suspects without success, before a 15-year-old boy self-presented with a stab wound.

He has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

In a renewed appeal, detectives investigating the murder urged anyone with information or video to come forward.

Detective Chief Inspector Richard Leonard, leading the investigation, said: “We are aware of footage relating to this murder being posted on social media and remind the public that any video or images may be very important to our investigation.

“If you have footage relating to this incident please don’t post it on social media.

"Your footage could be vital evidence in our investigation so please provide it us rather than making it public.

“The victim’s family is reeling from the shock of his death.

"Please consider their feelings and respect their privacy as they struggle to come to terms with their loss.”

The "senseless murder" has left many in the local community angry and scared, with several high profile figures speaking out about the violence.

A spokesperson for Greenwich Council said that, while some shielded the victim while he was receiving emergency treatment, others “took photos and videos which we are sickened to see posted on the internet.”

“At the respect of the victim’s family and friends, please do not post or share photos or videos of the victim,” they added.

Residents reported hearing “screaming”, “shouting” and “sirens” as police were called to Woolwich New Road at around 5.30pm.

One woman, who works in the area, told reporters she heard sirens and saw a girl walking down the road, on her phone and visibly upset.

A man who works at a convenience store near the scene of the crime said he heard screaming and saw school children running.

Fresh bouquets were laid down at the scene from early Tuesday afternoon onwards.

It is understood that the block of shops is likely to be cordoned off for the next few days.

DCI Leonard added: “I am very grateful to everyone who has come forward with information so far and urge anyone who can help, but has not yet spoken with us, to get in touch.”
