Football may be coming home this week, with one big step towards making it happen tonight, but police are urging fans to make sure they come home safe following England’s semi-final clash with Denmark.

The Three Lions take on the Danes tonight at 8pm hoping to book their place in the Wembley final vs Italy on Sunday.

Essex Police says England fans across the county have so far been well behaved with officers only called out to a “small number” of incidents.

A spokesperson for Essex Police said: “As has been the case for each England match throughout Euro 2020, we will have focused patrols at key times – namely before, during and after the match.

“Tonight will be no different, so you can expect to see our officers out and about on streets in our towns and city from this afternoon and into the evening.

“We are not there to detract from this historic occasion, nor are we there to dampen your spirits. We will be there to keep you safe and make sure you get home safely.”

If you are planning on watching the match at home, please stick to the current restrictions. That means watching in groups of no more than six or with two households.

Over the weekend, Essex Police arrested 22 people across the county for drink driving, 11 of which came after England’s victory over Ukraine on Saturday night.

There were also a number of collisions related to drink driving.

Adam Pipe, Head of Roads Policing at Essex Police, said: “We will have a higher number of officers out in Essex on Wednesday evening and Thursday morning. If you are going out as a group, think about designating a driver, using a taxi or even just walking home from the pub.

“Also, please consider the morning after; alcohol stays in the system and it’s really important people recognise that for the morning after when we will also have officers out and about on the roads of Essex keeping you all safe and carrying out a number of roadside breath tests.”
