A one of a kind climbing gym has opened in Wandsworth.
The brainchild of two passionate climbers based in the capital, Joey Powis and Richard Allinson, took almost two years of work.
But The Font Wandsworth has officially opened, offering Olympic standard climbing walls, a fitness gym and food facilities at its new premises on Lydden Road.
Co-founder of The Font, Mr Powis told the Wandsworth Times it was “surreal” that the space has finally opened.
“After two years of planning, and navigating a global pandemic, we’re now just focused on bringing our love for climbing to the local community and providing an environment that people never want to leave!”
“We focus on three elements – climb, train and connect.”
Climbing has become increasingly popular and will be included in the Olympics for the first time in Tokyo.
This year GB has a medal hopeful, multiple World Cup winner Shauna Coxey.
For non-athletes looking to try climbing The Font has 600 sqm of climbing walls.
The main focus is on ‘bouldering’, a more accessible activity that can be completed above crash mats without the need for ropes and harnesses.
However, there is also a large functional fitness gym and a stand-alone studio for those looking to improve their climbing performance or do gym workouts.
Mr Powis said a strong part of his vision was to offer a community space, where locals could connect after nearly 18 months apart.
The Font supports local businesses, serving coffee from Brixton roastery Volcano Coffee, beers from local breweries Belleville and Sly Beast, and gourmet burgers from Pirates Burgers on Lydden Road.
