A Barnet teenager has died after he was shot in a residential neighbourhood in Islington.

Taylor Cox, 19, died in hospital on Tuesday (June 8) after suffering a gunshot injury to his head.

He was found seriously injured in Hornsey Rise Gardens in Crouch Hill on Tuesday afternoon after police responded to reports of shots fired.

An emergency call came in at 4.24pm and the London Ambulance Service attended alongside the London Air Ambulance and the Met Police.

Police confirmed on Wednesday morning that a murder investigation had been launched after the victim, who police say lived in Barnet, died in hospital.

This morning, the Met confirmed the victim's identity as Taylor Cox and said his family are being supported by specialist officers.

A post-mortem examination will be scheduled in due course.

No arrests have been made yet in connection with Mr Cox's murder, although a 19-year-old man arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of being in possession of an offensive weapon has been charged and remanded to appear in court today.

A woman in Islington told the Evening Standard she believed the shooting to be a "targeted hit" and said the victim had been "ambushed" in an alley next to a school.

She said: "There was no argument or anything like that. I just heard the boy who was shot say one word but I couldn’t work out what it was.

"Then I heard 'bang, bang' gunshots very close together. Then a gap and one or two more shots as if they were making sure they finished him off. It looked like a targeted hit.

"The shooters ran off down the alley. It was like something out of a movie."

Detectives investigating the shooting have appealed for anyone who knows who is responsible for this "horrific" attack to come forward.

Detective Chief Inspector Linda Bradley said: "We're working with colleagues across the Metropolitan Police Service to identify those responsible for this most horrific attack, committed with a firearm in broad daylight in a residential area next to a primary school.

"Taylor's family have lost him in the cruellest way imaginable and they deserve our fullest commitment in seeking justice. I have no doubt that there are persons out there who know who committed this act and I’m asking them to make contact with us.

"Silence protects violent criminals. It is imperative that police and communities work together to apprehend those who are intent on committing serious violence and take them off our streets. There are anonymous methods such as Crimestoppers available in which you will not even have to give your name.

"What matters most is that you tell us what you know, and we find those responsible."

Anyone with information is asked to call 101 or tweet @MetCC quoting Op TREWEN and CAD 5570/08JUN21.
