An investigation has been launched into a Plumstead house fire which resulted in a man being hospitalised on Tuesday.
Firefighters were called to Pegwell Street on May 25 to a fire which had spread to part of the first floor of an end-of-terrace house.
Three men had left the building before the brigade arrived and one man was taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews.
The fire was discovered by a neighbour who saw smoke coming from a first-floor window and alerted the residents to the fire.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “This incident is a timely reminder to test your smoke alarms.
“There were smoke alarms fitted inside this property, but they failed to alert the residents to the fire.
“Smoke alarms give the earliest possible warning to fire, providing time to escape. You should have smoke alarms in every room where a fire could start, plus a heat alarm in the kitchen. It's important to test them regularly."

The Brigade was called at 11.11am and the fire was under control by 12.13pm.
Two fire engines and around 10 firefighters from Plumstead Fire Station attended the scene.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Brigade and the Metropolitan Police Service.
