IF a friend says you’re fine – are you really? A second ‘are you sure?’ can make all the difference, as UTC Heathrow students in Northwood have been finding out.
During Mental Health Awareness Week (May 10-15), the college has been encouraging students to ‘Ask Twice’, a message promoted by the Time to Change mental health campaign.
It recognises that many people experience problems, like anxiety or feeling low.
Simply asking a friend if they’re OK, followed up with a ‘are you sure?’, can be a vital lifeline to someone who is suffering.
In a personal development lesson on Tuesday (11), students were reassured it is common to experience ups and downs throughout life, and that it is good to talk about it to friends and trusted adults.
They were also told about support services for anyone struggling to cope, such as Childline, The Mix, Shout, Kooth, MIND and the Samaritans.
