Motorists will be prevented from driving along a road through Epping Forest at certain times of day from the end of this month.

Essex County Council has published a notice in this week’s edition of the Guardian detailing an order to stop vehicles from using Wake Road (known locally as Manor Road) in High Beech, Waltham Abbey, between its junctions with Wellington Hill and Pauls Nursery Road, primarily during evening and overnight.

The “experimental prohibition” order will come into operation on April 30 and is due to last for a maximum of 18 months.

The road will be closed by lockable gates during the hours of operation which will be seasonal. The gates will be opened and locked by the Epping Forest Keepers/Constables.

The notice states the restrictions will apply approximately as follows:

Mid-March to end of March: 5pm to 8am

End of March to Mid-May: 6.30pm to 8am

Mid-May to Mid-August: 8pm to 8am

Mid-August to Mid-September: 6.30pm to 8am

Mid-September to Mid-October: 5pm to 8am

Mid-October to Mid-March: 4pm to 8am

The notice adds the county council will consider in “due course” whether the experiment should be continued in force indefinitely.

However, it will welcome all comments in order to help judge whether the scheme is effective or not.

Meanwhile, a section of another Waltham Abbey road is due to be temporarily closed for 16 days from Monday for the installation of fibre broadband.

Lippitts Hill will be shut from a point approximately 540 metres south west of its junction with Blind Lane for a distance of approximately 535m in a south-westerly then south-easterly direction.

The diversion will be via Church Road, Mott Street, Lippitts Hill and vice versa.

Part of Church Lane, in Sheering, is also due to be shut to traffic for three days from Wednesday while water works are carried out.

The road will be closed from a point approximately 260m south of both its junctions with The Street for a distance of approximately 160m in a southerly direction.

The alternative route will be via Church Lane, The Street, Hatfield Heath Road, Sheering Road, Matching Road, Downhall Road, Matching Tye Road, Collins Cross Road and vice versa.
