A Lewisham mother says severe mould and damp throughout her property makes her worry for her children’s safety, health and mental state.

Tiffany featured on an ITV report into social housing conditions, revealing the extent of damp in her cramped two-bedroom flat, where she lives with three children.

She has spent ten years asking Lewisham Homes to properly address the issue, which was washed away on previous occasions only to return soon after.

She told ITV: "I've raised my concerns so many times and it seems like nobody cares.

“Why are we being forgotten?"

The unpleasant smell produced by the mould has forced the family to sleep in the living room.

"I do worry for them - their safety, their health, for their mental state as well," Tiffany said about her children.

Lewisham Homes says it is supporting Tiffany in the bidding process for a larger home, however a long waiting list stands in the way.

The Housing Ombudsman has launched an investigation into social housing conditions, following reports which revealed mould and damp were widespread in properties across the UK.

Damp and mould are caused by an excess of moisture, which can come from a range of sources, including leaking pipes and rain seeping through the roof or window frames.

Mould can have a serious impact on health, making occupants more likely to develop respiratory problems, respiratory infections, allergies and asthma.

In a statement, Lewisham Homes said: "Following a property inspection, we have arranged for our contractors to carry out further remedial works to remove the mould and redecorate.

"We will continue to monitor the situation in order to prevent this problem from reoccurring."
