A NEW ‘dark store’ is now operating in Greenford for Waitrose’s online delivery service.

It's in response to a growing demand for online shopping slots, especially from the elderly, disabled and vulnerable.

The ‘dark store’ will create around 800 new jobs when it’s fully running, with staff picking and packing some 1.25 million products a week for delivery in 150 new vans.

Supply chain partner Wincanton is developing the ‘dark store’ for Waitrose.

Laura Burbedge, Waitrose.com director, said online now accounted for a fifth of the company’s total business, compared to six per cent a year ago.
