Originally built as a barn 1859, Butlers Retreat in Chingford takes its name from its 1891 occupier, John Butler whose family sold refreshments to visitors to Epping Forest until 1971.
It is one of the few remaining Victorian retreats within the forest.
Retreats originally served non-alcoholic refreshments as part of the Temperance movement.
A new license was granted in 2012 for a café.
