The partner of the Mayor of Greenwich has sadly passed away from dementia and Covid-19 this morning (January 26).
Cllr Linda Bird, the Mayor of Greenwich, released a statement on Tuesday revealing that her partner, Tom Backelin, had died.
Tom passed away at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich, joining the 340 others in the boroughs to have died within 28 days of testing positive for coronavirus.
In the statement, Cllr Bird said: "It is with a heavy heart that I regretfully announce that my partner, Tom Backelin, passed away this morning from dementia and COVID-19 at Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
"I would like to thank all the wonderful team there who took care of him.
“My thoughts are with those across the Council and borough who have lost their loved ones too.”
Cllr Danny Thorpe, the council's leader, tweeted out his condolences, calling it a "really sad day for all of us in Greenwich Council."
