Plans for a special church service on the most romantic day of the year were making our headlines five years ago this week.

Hundreds of married couples have been invited back to where they had their special day as a church holds a unique Valentine’s Day celebration.

On February 14 All Saints’ church in Nazeing will open its doors to all the couples who have been married in the church over the years, with a celebration service held by the Right Revd Stephen Cottrell, Bishop of Chelmsford.

Brides have been invited to wear their wedding dresses, with the opportunity for couples to renew their vows at the service.

Those who have lost their spouses can light candles in their memories and give thanks for their marriage.

Reverend Helen Gheorghiu Gould, the newly appointed priest, said: “Marriage is a celebration and blessing before God of the deep love between two people, who are prepared to stick together through thick and thin until parted by death.

“That is an amazing commitment to make to another person and deserves great respect.

“Over the years, hundreds of people have been married at Nazeing.

“Whether they were married last year, or 50 years ago, we’d like to give them an opportunity to come back and celebrate their marriage with us.”

The service starts with refreshments at 10am and will finish at around midday with a light lunch.
