The operators of Barnehurst Golf Course have asked to be released from their lease with Bexley Council after feeling the strain of Covid-19.

Social enterprise Mytime Active have operated the south east London golf course since 2009, but like businesses across the region, they have suffered a large financial hit as a result of the pandemic.

And the company has now sadly asked to break its contract operating the golf site, located on Mayplace Road, Bexleyheath, from March 31, 2021.

In a statement, Mytime Active said that "after a challenging year, we have made the decision to ask Bexley Council to allow us to leave our lease."

And Cllr Peter Craske, cabinet member for places, will take the decision this week to allow them to withdraw from the site.

The decision is subject to the council's usual seven-day call in period, but should be approved by January 8.

Cllr Craske said: "I'll be very sad to see Mytime Active end their relationship with us.

"They have operated the course well over the last 11 years and it will be a shame to see them go, but I fully understand the reasoning behind their decision.

“This year has seen so many businesses affected by this terrible virus.

"I have been assured that they will continue to maintain the course up until 31 March and will be on hand to answer any enquiries until then. We hope to start our search for new course operator in the new year.”

The course at Barnehurst Golf Club is situated within the remains of historic Barnehurst Manor House, with the remains of the manor house  incorporated into the layout of several holes.

The current plan is for the site to be marketed as a golfing facility in order for the clubhouse, driving range and course to reopen as swiftly as possible, the council added.

There are no plans to use the site for any other purpose.
