The leader of Barnet Council has urged people to remain vigilant as the borough emerges from the national coronavirus lockdown.

Cllr Dan Thomas issued a statement reminding residents Covid-19 has not gone away and urging them to follow the Government guidelines to stop it from spreading.

It comes as London prepares to enter tier 2 restrictions from Wednesday, with non-essential businesses allowed to reopen but separate households unable to mix indoors unless they form a support bubble.

The ‘rule of six’ will be brought back, meaning people can socialise outdoors as long as they are in a group of six people or fewer.

But some restrictions have been tightened compared to the previous tier 2. Pubs and restaurants must close unless they are operating as restaurants, and hospitality venues can only serve alcohol with substantial meals.

Cllr Thomas said: “We have worked really hard together to keep the level of infection rates down locally. As we emerge from lockdown, it is important to remain vigilant and alert to the fact that the virus is still around.

“From December 2, non-essential shops can reopen, we can once again exercise in leisure facilities, attend communal services in places of worship, and meet friends and family outdoors in groups of six. Of course, doing so requires us to follow government guidance on staying Covid-19-safe – wear a face covering in designated places, keep your distance from people outside of your household and wash your hands regularly.

“As the rate of infection remains high in Barnet and the rest of London, we each have to take responsibility to stay safe and protect those most vulnerable. The ultimate aim is to save lives and keep infection rates down to avoid further restrictions in the New Year. Together, we will get through this.”
