The leader of Brent Council has urged people to “follow the rules” to help reduce the spread of Covid-19, as England enters a second national lockdown.

Cllr Muhammed Butt said adhering to government guidance is the best way to “get the deadly virus back under control”.

It comes as the country faces similar restrictions imposed in March, with people asked to stay at home unless it is necessary to leave for things such as work, education, or essential shopping.

Brent, like many areas in the UK, has seen an increase in the number of Covid-19 cases over the past few weeks.

Cllr Butt pointed out that, by the end of August, there were around 50 confirmed cases each week – this week, it has more than 400.

He said: “I know we all have our family, friends and loved ones in our thoughts and especially older family members or those who are clinically vulnerable.

“That’s why we must all follow the rules, so we can get the deadly virus back under control.

“This means important upcoming events like Bonfire Night and Diwali will have to be celebrated very differently.

“If we all pull together, we can protect our families and loved ones, and look forward to better times ahead.

“Please continue to wash your hands, cover your face and keep a safe distance from others.

“And if you have any symptoms of Covid-19, however mild, book a test straight away.”
