THERE have been 212 new coronavirus cases confirmed in Sussex in a day.

The positive tests were recorded in the 24 hours leading up to 9am yesterday, taking the total number reported in the county to 10,474.

The greatest increase was seen in West Sussex during this period, where 100 new cases took the region’s figure to 5,259.

There were also increases in Brighton and Hove, 66, and East Sussex, 46, taking these area’s totals to 2,202 and 3,013 respectively.

The rate of infection in Brighton and Hove is now 757 cases per 100,000 people.

In East Sussex it is 541 cases per 100,000 people, and in West Sussex it is 609 cases per 100,000 people.

These rates are all below the England average of 1,382 cases per 100,000 people.

Nationally, a further 22,885 cases were reported in the 24 hours leading up to 9am yesterday, taking the UK figure to 917,575.

The number of deaths within 28 days of a positive coronavirus test also increased between 5pm on Sunday and 5pm on Monday.

There were 367 within the 24-hour period, taking the UK total to 45,365 deaths within 28 days of a positive coronavirus test.

However, government figures show that there have been a far higher number of UK deaths with Covid-19 on the death certificate, with the figure listed as 58,925.
