SUSSEX Police have described the fatal shooting of a police officer in London as “unspeakably awful news”.

The force shared messages of solidarity after the officer was shot dead at Croydon Police Station.

A murder investigation has been launched following the incident in the early hours of this morning.

Writing on social media, chief constable Jo Shiner said: "Our thoughts are with all those affected by this, particularly the family."

While Sussex Roads Police shared an announcement from the Metropolitan Police on Twitter, writing: "Unspeakably awful news. 

“We're all with you on that thin blue line, Metropolitan Police."

The officer was shot by a man who was being detained at the custody centre in Windmill Lane.

He was treated at the scene by paramedics after the incident at 2.15am.

The officer later died in hospital of gunshot wounds.

A 23-year-old man was detained by officers at the scene.

He was also taken to hospital with a gunshot wound and remains in a critical condition.

No police firearms were discharged during the incident, the Met Police said.

The officer's family are being supported by specialist officers.
