THOUSANDS of people have received a face mask due to the growing success of a blooming tree project.

Students, teachers, volunteers and community members have received a reusable face mask in Sutton, Merton and beyond.

The rather unusual looking trees have been popping up in schools, residential roads, and public areas such as Nonsuch Park and Your Space Sutton.

The 'Acts of Random Kindness Community Mask Tree' ( A.R.K ) was set up by Morden mum Syebvonne Nguyen.

This Is Local London:

When starting A.R.K on her road in Queen Mary Avenue, Syebvonne had no idea how the project would be received.

But after its first bloom back in June, queues started to form outside her door and the popularity grew.

Due to the demand, Syebvonne has been offered help from volunteers to help maintain and 'host' additional trees.

Pupils with free schools meals are offered a free mask, whilst others are asked to donate £5 to help fund materials to sew more.

Those who collect their mask from the blooming tree's will be able to find a QR code poster and a round tub to donate.

Syebvonne Nguyen said: "During these strange times some people may be struggling.

"I know that the expenditure to prepare a child back to school can get very expensive.

"So I am really keen to help the students receiving school lunch, get at least one free mask to relief the expense.

"I have also seen the amount of disposable masks used in a school compound, it was scary to think that they would be added to landfill."

She added: "It has become an iconic tree that is bringing strangers together through volunteering.

"The three strong standing volunteers are still sewing with me where another has just been added to the list as we speak.

"The intangible benefit from the tree is tremendous.

"It has brought people closer, supplied opportunities and also created a way to express kindness through a unique and tangible way.

"Alone, I can't continue, but with the support of the public, I can."
