Firefighters rushed to the rescue of two dogs trapped in a house fire yesterday.

Fire crews were called to a blaze at a home in Western Road, Brentwood, at 10.20am on Wednesday, September 3.

A small fire had started in a utility room and two dogs were trapped inside by the flames.

Firefighters quickly worked to stabilise the situation before carrying the pups to safety.

A youngster in the house had called 999 after a smoke alarm alerted him to the fire.

Crew Manager Maxim Clark said: "He did exactly the right thing by getting out, staying out and calling 999. He did not put himself in danger and we were on the scene quickly, put out the fire and rescued the dogs."

It is believed the fire was caused by an overloaded extension lead which had a washing machine and tumble dryer plugged into it and set fire to a pile of clothes.

The fire, which was fully extinguished by 11.02am, was contained to the utility room but the kitchen and lounge suffered smoke damage.

A spokesperson for Essex Fire and Rescue Service said: "Thankfully in this incident, the occupants were alerted to the fire before smoke alarms sounded.

"However, we want every home in Essex to be protected by smoke alarms - so if you don't have them in your property, we'll come and visit you and fit them free of charge.

"Simply call 0300 303 0088 or head to essex-fire.gov.uk/book to arrange your visit."
