The latest figures for new cases of coronavirus across the UK reveal there have been 138 new positive cases in south east London and north Kent over the past week as Covid-19 rates continue to creep up.

Of the new cases, 34 of these were in Greenwich which has seen its Covid-19 rate more than double in the past seven days.

The rolling seven-day figures show the number of new cases for every local authority area in England, based on tests carried out in laboratories and in the wider community.

The figures, representing the seven days to August 30, show a Covid-19 rate based on the number of new cases per 100,000 people.

Data for the most recent three days (August 31-September 2) has been excluded as it is incomplete and likely to be revised, meaning these are the most up to date figures as of September 2.

Virus infection rates across south east London have been yoyo-ing at a relatively safe rate for two months now, but are continuing to rise slowly.

Greenwich saw the largest number of cases across the region, with 34 new cases and a Covid-19 rate of 11.8 per 100,000, more than double the previous rate of 5.2 from a week ago.

Bexley's virus infection rate also rose from 9.3 to 11.7 after 29 new cases were confirmed, whilst Bromley's rate actually fell from 11.4 to 8.1 with 27 new cases recorded.

Lewisham also saw its rate fall to 7.5 despite 23 new cases, but has still seen a steady rise from this time a month ago.

This means all south east London boroughs are recording relatively high numbers, but are well below the watchlist level.

In north Kent, Gravesham recorded a whopping Covid-19 rate of 15.0, recording 16 cases, whilst Dartford saw 9 new cases, meaning its rate was 8.9.

Nearby, Wandsworth continues to have the highest rate of Covid-19 in south London with a massive 62 new cases, despite an actual small fall in its rate to 18.8.

Richmond's Covid-19 rate is 15.2, Kingston close behind with 14.1, Croydon sits at 10.6 and Merton and Sutton recorded 6.3 and 4.8 respectively.

The list has been calculated by the PA news agency and is based on Public Health England data published on August 21 on the Government's coronavirus online dashboard.

In Pendle, 69 new cases were recorded in the seven days to August 30 - the equivalent of 74.9 per 100,000 people.

This is the highest rate in England, and it is up from 58.6 in the seven days to August 23.

The rate in Bolton has jumped from 18.8 to 69.6, with 200 new cases.

Rossendale is in third place, where the rate has increased from 12.6 to 65.8 with 47 new cases.

Other areas recording notable week-on-week jumps include:

- South Tyneside (up from 12.6 to 46.4, with 70 new cases)

- Trafford (up from 20.6 to 38.8, with 92 new cases)

- Leeds (up from 21.1 to 32.5, with 258 new cases)

- Wirral (up from 9.6 to 26.5, with 86 new cases)
