Police descended on London Road in Mitcham yesterday evening after reports of a man with a gun surfaced from the area Friday afternoon (August 14).
An unidentified man was reportedly seen by eyewitnesses toting a gun of some kind in the area.
Police said they were called early on Friday afternoon, around midday, by the witnesses and responded in large numbers as a precaution.
Responding to a request from the Wimbledon Times, a spokesperson for the Met Police said:
"We had reports of a man with a firearm in a car on that road much earlier in the day... We attended but no suspect/firearm was found."
Images and video seen by the Wimbledon Times showed a heavy police presence at the scene where the man holding a gun had been reported.
A number of police cars and officers from the Met Police ringed a section of London Road that appeared to have been cordoned off by police on Friday evening.
