A man is in a critical condition in hospital after he was hit by a train.

Emergency services rushed to Carpenders Park station at 5.40am this morning after receiving reports that there was a casualty on the tracks.

The East of England Ambulance Service has said that its crew treated the man at the station before he was taken to Watford General Hospital for further assessment and care.

The British Transport Police has described the man's condition as "critical".

Outside Carpenders Park station, there were multiple police vehicles, paramedics and firefighters.

The ambulance service said it sent two ambulances, two ambulance officers, two hazardous area response teams and a car.

A spokesperson for the British Transport Police said: "We were called at 5.40am today (12/08) to an area of railway near Carpenders Park railway station following a report of a casualty on the tracks.

"Officers and paramedics attended the scene and a person was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

"The incident is not being treated as suspicious."

National Rail confirmed that there were several disruptions affecting London Overground, Southern and Avanti West Coast trains.

But services for Avanti and London Northwestern are no longer affected. Trains between Watford Junction and London Euston are now running normally.
