A woman has been arrested and remains in custody in South London after being suspected of funding terrorism, the Met Police have said.

The 31-year-old woman, whose identity remains unknown at present, was arrested by officers from the Met's Counter Terrorism Command early this morning (August 5).

A spokesperson for the Met Police said they took her to a South London police station where she remains at present as inquiries into her suspected links to terrorism continue.

In a statement published by the Met on Wednesday, a spokesperson said:

"On Wednesday, 5 August, at approximately 07.30hrs, officers from the Met's Counter Terrorism Command arrested a 31-year-old woman on suspicion of funding terrorism, contrary to Section 17 of the Terrorism Act 2000.

"The woman was arrested under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act [PACE] at an address in north-west London.

"She has been taken into custody at a south London police station."

The woman is thought to be a resident of North-West London and the Met said their inquiries continue at an address in North London.

According to the UK's secret service Mi5, the current threat of a terror attack in the country is "SUBSTANTIAL", the third highest on the spectrum of five stages used by security services to identify how likely a terrorist incident is in the UK:

  • low - an attack is highly unlikely
  • moderate - an attack is possible but not likely
  • substantial - an attack is likely
  • severe - an attack is highly likely
  • critical - an attack is highly likely in the near future

The police said last year that the fastest-growing terror threat in the UK comes from far-right extremism.
