A bus driver is self-isolating after he was spat at in the Watford area this morning.

Uno bus says one of its drivers was parked up at a bus stop when the passenger of a passing car spat at him.

As a result, the 602 bus service, which runs between Watford and Hatfield, was cancelled because Uno decided the bus had to be deep-cleaned.

The motive behind the assault is unclear but police have been informed.

There is nothing to suggest the spitter has coronavirus but Uno, which runs bus services across Hertfordshire, is not taking any chances.

James Thorpe, managing director of Uno Buses, said: "Earlier today I can confirm that there was an incident involving one of our drivers whereby the passenger of a passing car spat on him whilst he was parked at a bus stop in the Watford area.

"We are providing the driver with support and as a precaution, he is now self-isolating and will be tested for COVID-19.

"The bus was fully disinfected and cleaned.

"This type of incident is very rare. We do not tolerate this behaviour towards our drivers or our customers and we will be working with the police to help identify those responsible."

Uno Bus tweeted this morning: "Service Cancellation: 602. 9:42 Aldenham To Dehavilland Campus. We apologise the service was cancelled due someone spitting at our Driver, this is by no means acceptable. Bus is returned to be deep cleaned."
