Harrow Council hopes to implement further measures to tackle rogue landlords by renewing a licensing scheme in part of the borough.

It is consulting on whether to continue with selective licensing in Edgware ward, which would mean all privately rented properties in the area would require a licence, which cost £550 and are valid for up to five years.

According to the council, this allows it to ensure all homes meet fire safety standards and that basic amenities and general management of rented properties are being met.

Cllr Varsha Parmar, who is responsible for the environment at Harrow Council, said: “Our residents deserve to live in clean and safe homes.

“While the majority of landlords to take care good care of their tenants, there are unfortunately a minority who simply don’t care.

“The selective licensing scheme has worked really well in Edgware allowing us to take tough action against some of our bad landlords – while also allowing us to support landlords who want the best for their tenants to protect them from risk or harm.

“We want to continue work together to reduce anti-social behaviour and improve the quality of life for tenants.”

She added the council is asking those who live in Edgware to have their say on the proposals and it is keen to work with all parties throughout the process.

The public consultation runs until August 14. Visit consult.harrow.gov.uk/consult.ti/Renselectllcen/consultationHome for more information.
