McDonald's has been forced to bring back security following queues continuing to 'spiral out of control'.

McDonald's opened 39 stores in the UK and Ireland, including North Cheam, on May 20, which resulted in huge tailbacks along the A217.

Over the past few weeks, the huge queues have caused; traffic jams, violence between customers and pedestrians feeling 'unsafe' as cars blocked zebra crossings.

Courtenay Road and Lavender Avenue have become severely blocked, which has prevented vehicles from entering and leaving the A24.

One week after the chaotic queues, security team, Phoenix Security, were pictured managing traffic at the North Cheam branch, which helped prevent the 'tailback from continuing excessively'.

However, on June 4, McDonald's announced the reopening of all of their drive-through's which resulted in the departure of the security team.

Member of Worcester Park Residents Association, Richard Johnson, decided to raise residents concerns in an email addressed to, Franchisee Danny O'Sullivan, which said:

"With just a single member of the McDonald’s team at the restaurant end of the queue, the tailback has once again been allowed to extend out of sight, and out of control.

"It’s clear such a situation needs hands-on security professionals with experience, authority and empathy.

"Previous experience of the same problems only a fortnight ago showed us that Phoenix Security can easily solve the problems.

"I, therefore, write to you, to recall the small team from Phoenix Security, and alleviate the streets and community of the chaos that has returned."

A spokesperson for McDonald's said: “With restaurant teams adjusting to new procedures to enable safe working and social distancing, things may take a little longer – and demand has already been very high.

"We are aware that at busier times there have been queues, and in line with our opening plans, we have been working closely with local authorities and the police to mitigate the impact of increased traffic wherever possible."

External traffic management experts will be in place at North Cheam Friday – Sunday 4 pm to 10 pm until the end of June.

From Wednesday, June 10, we will be reintroducing McDelivery at North Cheam which will ease some of the pressure on the drive-through.
