Around 40 firefighters were called to a fire in an underground car park beneath flats in Hither Green this morning.

Six fire engines were called to the scene of the fire in Birdwood Avenue at around 9am (April 30)

Footage posted on social media showed smoke appearing to rise up into the street from underneath the block of flats.

London Fire Brigade confirmed the fire was under control before 10am and that no injuries had been reported.

A spokesman said: "Two cars were destroyed by the blaze. Around 70 people left the block of flats above the car park before the Brigade arrived. There were no reports of any injuries.

"The Brigade's 999 Control Officers took 13 calls to the fire.

"The Brigade was called at 0857 and the fire was under control by 0939. Fire crews from Lewisham, Lee Green, Forest Hill, Greenwich, Eltham and Deptford fire stations were at the scene."

The cause of the fire will now be the subject of an investigation.
