In a close fought battle to progress to the final of the World Cup of London Boroughs 2020, Lewisham has emerged triumphant over Greenwich.

The two south east London boroughs went head to head on social media over the last two days, fighting a popularity contest to be crowned the best borough in London, according to Twitter.

The results were extremely close, with nearly 5,000 votes being cast.

Greenwich took an early lead yesterday, April 1, but this morning Lewisham ended up overtaking its neighbour, winning 51.2% to 48.8%.

The light-hearted competition is run by a Twitter account aptly called World Cup of London Boroughs 2020, with thousands of people stuck indoors during the UK's lockdown getting involved.

The councils also got involved in the fun, encouraging followers to vote.

Both boroughs emerged through three rounds to get to the semi-finals, proving them to be among the most popular in London.

Greenwich defeated Bexley in the first round, followed by Hammersmith & Fulham and Haringey.

Lewisham, which has just recently won the London Borough of Culture 2021, bested Havering, Barnet and Southwark to get to the semis.

Facing of against either Croydon or Islington in the final, Lewisham is now on course to win the competition for the third year in a row!
