Green bin rounds will be suspended amid ongoing disruption to council services caused by coronavirus Covid-19.

In an update published on Wednesday (April 1), Barnet Council announced garden waste collections will temporarily stop from 5pm on Saturday, April 4.

The roll-out of a £70-a-year subscription service for green bin collections – due to start on April 6 – will be pushed back.

On Monday (March 30), the council said recycling bins would be collected once a fortnight while garden waste collections would continue as normal.

But on Wednesday it announced: “It is with regret that the council has had to take the difficult decision to defer the launch of the subscribed green waste collection service due to the impact of COVID-19.

“The epidemic is expected to peak over the coming weeks and the council will need to prioritise services that help protect and ensure public health.

“Our resources will therefore be focussed on the black refuse bin collection service to ensure materials such as food waste and used nappies continue to be regularly collected from households.

“If you have signed up and paid for the service which was planned to start from 6 April, we will be extending your subscription year in line with the date collections will resume. This is to ensure you still receive a full year’s service.”
