Robbers wearing surgical masks injured two men as they were queueing for a supermarket.
Two men in their 20s were in the line at Co-Op in Colt Hatch, Harlow, at around 7pm when they were approached by a group of three men wearing surgical masks.
All three men were believed to also be in their 20s.
Essex Police say one of the attackers was wearing a dark blue puffa-style jacket that was light blue on the bottom, dark coloured tracksuit bottoms and white trainers.
The victims were left with minor injuries after the attack.
Police are appealing for anyone at the line or any witnesses to call 101 quoting crime reference 42/48050/20.
