A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following a stabbing which took place yesterday in Woolwich.

Police were called to reports of a stabbing at Academy Road, junction with Shooters Hill at around 3.28 pm, on March 15.

Officers attended the scene with London Ambulance Services and found the 18-year-old victim in the Woolwich Common area.

The victim was immediately treated on the scene, however, despite paramedics best efforts sadly died at the scene.

Police launched an urgent appeal for information yesterday and arrested an 18-year-old man in the Thamesmead area on suspicion of murder today.

Officers from Specialist Crime South are investigating under DCI Richard Leonard.

A spokesperson for the police said:

"Whilst inquiries continue to establish the full circumstances of the incident.

"We know there was a collision between a car and a motorbike being ridden by the victim.

"As a result, the victim came off his bike and the suspect exited the vehicle and stabbed him.

"At this stage officers believe both parties were known to each other."

The victims next of kin have been identified, however police await on formal identification.

A post-mortem examination is set to take place at Greenwich Mortuary, tomorrow (March 17).
