A Bromley primary school is remaining open despite a pupil testing positive for coronavirus.

Rangefield Primary School informed parents yesterday that a child had been diagnosed in hospital, having been "unwell for a while."

While the child has been discharged and is now recovering, the school has been advised by the Department of Education to remain open.

A statement from Mrs M Fenniche, Executive Headteacher, reads: "We have been informed that a child of Rangefield Primary School has been tested positive for Coronavirus, whilst in hospital and has been unwell for while.

"Firstly, the childs health is improving and is of course being monitored and has now been sent home from hospital. This is great news for the child and for the family.

"Even though their health has improved, they will of course be self-isolating, until all symptoms have gone.

"I have today taken advice from the DFE, who also passed me on to the Health Protection team in order to ensure that the correct guidance and advice is followed by the school.

"I asked as to whether the school should close and the response was no, the information below is what needs to be followed.

"I also asked if the school should close and carry out a deep clean.

"Again the answer received was no, as the child has not been in school within the last 72 hours, there would be no benefit of doing this."

The school says it will be conducting an additional clean in "key areas", despite the DfE's advice.

There have been seven confirmed cases overall in Bromley, 1,391 cases in the UK, 407 of those in London.

A total of 35 people have died as a result of the virus.

Education Secretary Gavin Williamson is expected to meet with school leaders today to discuss the implications of school closures and exams being postponed amid the outbreak.
