Plans that could have got in the way of one of Transport for London (TfL)’s Bakerloo Line extension proposed sites have been scrapped.

TfL is planning to extend the Bakerloo line from Elephant and Castle to Lewisham via Old Kent Road and New Cross Gate.

But A2Dominion and Mount Anvil, along with Sainsbury’s, applied to build a new superstore and 1,161 flats in towers reaching 33 storeys by New Cross Gate station.

Earlier this year the developers submitted a planning application and suggested another site in New Cross for the extension instead.

Now a Sainsbury’s spokesperson said the uncertainty around TfL’s plans made progressing the project “unfeasible”.

The plans included apartment blocks of up to 33 storeys in an area where the average building height is two to three storeys.

The supermarket, petrol station and three retail warehouses on site – Dreams, Harvey’s Furniture and TK Maxx – would have been knocked down.

A spokesperson said: “As a partnership we worked very hard to produce a scheme that would regenerate the New Cross Gate community, delivering high quality new homes, a significant quantum of affordable housing, a modern flagship supermarket, and high calibre green spaces.

“We have always supported the Bakerloo Line Extension, however the uncertainty around its delivery has meant that progressing our project is unfeasible.

“We have therefore agreed not to pursue the application any further.”

Damien Egan, mayor of Lewisham, welcomed the withdrawal.

He said: “The Bakerloo Line Extension would be revolutionary for Lewisham.

“It would cut journey times between Lewisham and central London with trains every two to three minutes, making it easier for our residents to get around and bring more businesses and jobs to Lewisham.

“We welcome Sainsbury’s withdrawal of its planning application at this time, so we can now all focus on bringing the Bakerloo line to Lewisham.

“The site is TfL’s preferred construction option for delivering the Bakerloo Line Extension as well as the location of a new London Underground station at New Cross Gate.

“Our priority is safeguarding the Bakerloo Line Extension route and we are continuing to work with TfL to make representations to the Government to achieve this.”
