The competitive spirit ran high on Tuesday as firefighters, school pupils and bemused tourists came together for the "flippin' marvellous" annual Greenwich Market Pancake Races.

Hosted by Greenwich Markets, Pearly King of Woolwich, Clive Bennett, and Greenwich Pearly Queen Gwen Jones, the Pancakes Races took place on Saturday, February 22, and Tuesday, February 25 to celebrate Pancake Day and raise funds for charity.

A team of Fire Cadets also ran a stall on the Saturday, advising visitors on fire safety in the home.

Mick McCarthy, Blue Watch Sub Officer at Greenwich fire station, speaking at the event, said: “It was great to be involved in today’s event and watching our cadets take part in the race was a funny sight, everyone enjoyed themselves and it was for a great cause to raise money for the Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice.

"Community events like this one are a great opportunity to speak to local residents about fire safety in the home – especially how to enjoy flipping their pancakes safely.”
