A COUPLE from Oswestry donated more than £400 to a Shropshire-based cancer charity after celebrating their Ruby wedding anniversary.

Ann and Stephen Ashworth celebrated their anniversary with a holiday to Barbados in January, and upon returning to the UK, received a nice surprise.

Their daughter and son-in-law, Andrea and Scott Marston, told the couple they were going for a meal in The Sweeney; but what they thought was a quiet Sunday lunch turned out to be a celebration with more than 60 people in attendance.

When family and friends asked for gift ideas, they instead decided to raise money for the Lingen Davies Cancer Fund at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

Stephen received care and treatment from the staff at the unit last year, so the family felt it was fitting to raise the money, which in total amounted to £450.

After finding out the total amount raised, Ann and Stephen presented a cheque to the charity’s fundraising officer, Jane Trudgill.
