Members of the public rushed to the scene of a crash and tried to rescue a woman who was run over by a bus, a witness recalled.

The woman who was hit by a bus in Market Street on Monday just before 6.20pm died at the scene.

A man, who works nearby and did not want to be named, said he heard someone shout “someone has been hit by a bus” and then saw people running towards the single-decker bus when they realised a woman had become caught beneath it.

Several people tried to lift the bus and called for the driver “to move” the vehicle, he recalled. They were eventually able to pull the woman out from underneath the bus.

Emergency services later arrived and police cordoned off the area between the High Street and the ring road.
