A new community orchard celebrated its official opening by planting the its first tree.
The seeding apple tree was planted at Town Mead, Waltham Abbey, Town Mayor Antony Watts on Wednesday, January 29.
Around 42 trees, including, plum, cherry, greengage, damson and pear trees, are expected to fill the the new Community Orchard project orchard, funded by the University of East Anglia and the Heritage Lottery.
Waltham Abbey Town Council has also planted some 45 woodland trees, ranging from oak, field maple, crab apple, wild cherry, birch and hornbeam on the bank at Town Mead thanks to a grant from the Woodland Trust.

Town Mayor Antony Watts said: “I am absolutely delighted to plant the first apple tree in our Community Orchard. It is special because it is the Waltham Abbey seedling apple.
"We are looking to plant more trees in the near future as part of our aim to become carbon neutral by 2030.”
