IN the run-up to Young Carers Awareness Day this Thursday (30), Ealing councillors Simon Woodroofe and Hitesh Tailor took part in a young carers’ session last week.
They tried their hand at pizza making and table tennis at Horizons Community Centre in Hanwell.
Ealing Young Carers project, commissioned by the council, is run by Brentford FC Community Sports Trust and offers respite to young people in the borough who look after a relative.
It gives carers aged 8-18 somewhere to socialise, learn new skills and gain in confidence.
“It was good to see first-hand the young carers activities in Hanwell,” said Cllr Tailor.
“A parent I spoke to on the night explained how she felt the sessions had improved the general wellbeing of her young son.”
Numbers taking part have grown from 25 to nearly 200 under coordinator Kathryn Sobczak, a former young carer herself.
