A building that a school has waited years to move into has been granted planning permission.

Since St Andrew Apostle Greek Orthodox School was opened in 2013, it has been placed in a temporary accommodation in North London Business Park in new Southgate.

But as part of a wider residential development by the Comer Group approved by the planning inspectorate, a new permanent building will be built for the school to move into inside the business park.

A separate sports hall for the school will also be built as part of the planning application, as well as 1,350 new homes around the business park.

The school said it was "thrilled and excited" with the decision for the new building to be built.

Headteacher of the school Michael Vassiliou said: “It means that our community will receive what it deserves – the very best of educational opportunities in purpose-built accommodation for our students, and the opportunity for our staff to continue to develop our already wonderfully, successful school.”

The new facilities in the school building will include purpose built science labs, technology rooms, ICT suites and music rooms.

Currently the school has classrooms in the temporary building that are loosely converted for practical use.

Yiannis Pareas, chair of governors at the school, said: “The Governing Body of St Andrew the Apostle School is extremely pleased with the announcement that a new, permanent building for the school has been agreed.

“We, along with staff members and students, are looking forward to the new premises and we are grateful to the government for this decision and the funding that goes along with it. We would like to give thanks to all who have supported us in the venture.”

Colin Mackinlay, CEO of the Russell Education Trust (RET), added: “The whole school community has waited a very long time for this decision.

“It is wonderful that the exceptional provision that they have established in their temporary home will now be able to flourish in a purpose built modern building – this is fantastic news too for the families who will be joining the school this September.”
