Numerous weather and flood warnings have been issued in south east London as strong winds and rain from Storm Brendan batter the country.

Wind reaching up to 60mph are expected to hit tonight, and long delays are expected at the Dartford crossing today (January 14) as high winds spark fears that the crossing could close.

The Met Office has issued multiple yellow weather warnings across London due to the strong winds, whilst the Environmental Agency has issued a flood alert for the coast from Dartford to Allhallows.

Strong winds, large waves and high tides caused by Storm Brendan are behind the flood warnings, and more is forecast for the south coast today and tomorrow.

The Environmental Agency is urging people near the coast to check their flood risk and to take extra care, whilst heavy rain between 1pm today and 9am tomorrow could yet cause more disruption to the roads in central London.

Strong winds have already caused drivers on the QEII Bridge at the Dartford Crossing to drive at a maximum speed of 30mph under speed restrictions on Monday evening.

Despite the awful weather, Highways England have said there are currently no plans for the QEII Bridge to close tonight, but the Woolwich Ferry is currently suspended due to high tides.

The Environmental Agency flood alert, pictured above, is expected to affect multiple areas, including Dartford, Crayford, Gravesend, Greenhithe and Northfleet.

High tides were forecast at 3pm, and flooding is possible up until 5pm today.

The Environmental Agency said that property flooding is not currently expected, but incident response staff were monitoring the situation.

Sarah Cook, Flood Duty Manager at the Environment Agency, said: "Strong winds and high tides could lead to large waves and localised flooding along parts of the south coast of England over the coming days. We are advising people to sign up for flood warnings and to take extra care when walking along the coast – large waves can be dangerous.

"There is also an ongoing risk of groundwater flooding in parts of southern England following December’s above average rainfall. We are advising local communities in these areas to remain vigilant to the risks of flooding.
