Lewisham Council is holding an event to help EU nationals navigate Brexit.
The EU Citizens’ Engagement Event, set to take place on January 28, will offer “practical support” to EU citizens living in the borough “by providing advice on how the council can help them successfully apply for settled status”.
“The proposal is that service specific information – also available in the main EU languages of residents living in the borough – is provided on tables/stands located on the upper foyer.
“Officers will be present to offer hands-on advice and answer questions from EU residents throughout the two-hour period,” according to the council.
The stands will be staffed by representatives of public services, housing and homelessness services, culture and community development, libraries, and trading standards.
Hosts Mayor Damien Egan and Brexit lead Councillor Kevin Bonavia are both due to give ten-minute presentations from 6.30pm to 6.50pm.
Cllr Bonavia said: “We’re doing everything we can to prepare for the impact of Brexit on Lewisham, not least for all our residents from other EU countries.
“That’s why we’re encouraging all our EU residents without British citizenship to apply for settled status and we’re also offering a verification service that’s free of charge.
“Whatever happens because of Brexit, we’re proud of Lewisham’s EU residents and the contribution they make to our diverse community and want to help them continue to be a big part of it.”
Rosario Guimba-Stewart, CEO of the Lewisham Migrant and Refugee Network, is also attending the event, which will take place from 6pm to 8pm on January 28 at the Civic Suite, Catford Road.
