A minibus stolen from a day centre for disabled adults in Belvedere has reportedly been found and returned to police.

Smerdon Day Centre expressed their "utter disbelief" after a person broke into the 16-seater minibus and drove it away in the early hours of Sunday morning, December 1, all of which was caught on CCTV.

The day centre, run by a social enterprise aiming to get people suffering from an array of different learning disabilities into paid employment, said the loss of their minibus would hugely impact their ability to operate in the community.

But two days later, following several appeals on social media, the bus has reportedly been found in Orpington.

The distinctive green minibus has now been handed over to local police who are carrying out a forensic examination to determine how much damage has been caused.

A member of the public reportedly saw the Facebook post left by Dream Media, the social enterprise run from Smerdon, recognised the minibus and contacted police.

It is still not know what condition the minibus was left in, and we have contacted Bexleyheath Police for comment.

Mark Gordon, 53, has worked at the day centre for 22 years, and he said: "It's a relief that such a awful story has turned into a positive one."

Mr Gordon said around 100 people use the centre daily, and the group were really upset when they found out they'd lost their minibus.

"Our response was utter belief, we have good security measures but they just took what they wanted.

"It makes you think about the type of people out there, but a terrible thing has been met with a really positive response from the community."

Mark said he was waiting for the police to finish carrying out forensics on the minibus before it is hopefully returned.

The minibus is used to transport large groups of people who use the centre, many of whom suffer from complex disabilities.
